DRRM conducts Training and Seminar on Emergency Radio Response

To widen their knowledge and understanding on the utilization of emergency radio and response, Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) of Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) Guiuan Campus holds a Training and Seminar Activity on Emergency Radio and Response. Teachers from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and selected students from the Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BS Crim.) attended the said undertaking held at the Campus Covered Court on March 14, 2022.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Eduardo A. Cablao Jr., Head of DRRM, discussed the purpose of the training and seminar where he explained, “… emergency occur every day in our lives. Self-sign can be doubtful during disaster, so it helps to have a radio that can you update you on relief and rescue efforts”. He also mentioned the importance of the two-way and handled radio on daily basis as he said, “Importante ine ha aton yana kasi dire la ine naton magagamit in our field or ha aton trabaho. Magagamit ine hiya kasi iton cellphone or smartphones yana, usahay nawawarayan signal bisan ngani waray kalamidad nga nahinanabo nawawara madanay iton signal.”

In addition, Mr. Allan M. Gerald, a Radio Operator, discussed about Access ERT INC., an Amateur Radio Communication Group based in Catbalogan City. It is a non-stock, non-profit and no-partisan organization, duly registered and accredited by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). He also discussed the basic qualification of an Access ERT INC., wherein, for a person to be qualified, he/she must be at least 18 years old and above, with no criminal or pending records, has the ability to communicate on radio equipment, physically fit, and has attended the orientation on radio control laws and amateur radio operation procedure.

Moreover, Mr. Egon Alura, a trained first-aider, discussed Amateur Radio and HAM radio, the basics on amateur radio operating procedures, operating a radio station, use of breaks, amateur jargons, and the ITU phonetic alphabet where amidst Mr. Alura’s discussion, he stated that, “…whenever you are using a radio, you should always learn and you should always feel the situation of someone else in that frequency.”

Mr. Alura also expressed his discontent with youngsters who heavily rely on the possible uses of latest technology and stated that, “We have been too confident about our cellphones, those cell sites had only maximum calls that they can take. Furthermore, Dr. Jose A. Cabides, Head of Medical and Dental Services, delivered his closing remark formally where he stated that, “one of the goals of DRRM is being prepared not only in our own homes, but as well as you here in school, salit iginprepare ine ni Mr. Cablao together with ACCESS ERT INC., is because we all know that during disasters, one of the significant things nga kinahanglanon is communication between rescuers so kun waray komunikasyon, iton bulig maiha umabot.”

            A certificate of recognition was given to the speakers, participants and the teachers from CAS after the training and seminar with Mr. Janus Naing as the Master of the Ceremony.
